Essaouira is truly a city of culture and the arts, indeed the calendar of life in Mogador is punctuated with three important musical rendezvous :
- The Festival des Alizés in springtime/late April dedicated to classical music
- The Gnaoua World Music Festival in June celebrates traditional Moroccan, and more recently, world music
- The Andalousies Atlantiques in early November, honouring the musical fusion between Morocco and Spain
- Jazz sous L'Arganier, intimate festival welcoming international and Moroccan groups
Going back to the founding of Essaouira, our city’s rich musical heritage is characterised by the diversity of rites of the various musical guilds, in particular the Aissaoua,
the Hmadcha and the Gnawa. In addition there are important traditional musical activities in the Malhoun, the Aita and the Ahwach and Amerg Berber music of Hara.
Abdessamad - Director of the Essaouira Conservatoire, enthusiastic and dedicated researcher of Essaouira’s musical history,
professional lutenist and lute maker – guides you through the history and immerses visitors in a fascinating world of memorable artistic experiences.
The origins of Gnawa music – its musicians mainly descend from former slaves – and traditional instruments used by Gnawa artists are explained,
followed by a visit to the workshop where the particular Souiri Moroccan instrument is made: the lute ramal.
We end the visit with some fitting improvisations by a Gnawa Maalem, a Guembri player.
